It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Mullis, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this life on January 21, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on April 25, 1933, Bill was a stalwart gentleman whose life was defined by his unwavering dedication to family and an impressive professional career.
Bill was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 38 years, Marie Mullis, as well as his siblings, John, Joanne, and Shirley Mullis. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Malcom and Josie Mullis. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and resilience, being survived by his daughters Pam Dorn and her husband Dean, Paula Boucher, Patricia Lee Mullis, and Peggy Deiter and her husband Glen. He is also survived by his son, Dennis Runnels; 12 cherished grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Bill's educational journey began at Hoisington High School in Kansas, followed by his studies at Cal Poly University. At the young age of 17, he enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War, where he served his country with honor and distinction. Bill's professional career was remarkable; he contributed significantly to the development of programs for the Minuteman missiles and later moved to Southern California in 1962. Bill worked for esteemed companies such as Hewlett-Packard and Boeing, where he played a vital role in the software development for the Space Shuttle Columbia, as well as advancements in cell phone technology, internet systems, traffic signals, and ATMs.
Bill possessed a deep passion for music and was known for his beautiful singing voice, with a particular fondness for the timeless classics of Frank Sinatra. He also enjoyed fishing and was a dedicated Florida Gators fan, often sharing his enthusiasm for the team with family and friends.
He will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
