Obituary

Elmer William "Bill" Underwood III, 62, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

Bill was born on January 6, 1964, in Idabel, Oklahoma, and grew up there. He was the son of Elmer "Shorty" Underwood and Yvonne Underwood, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Idabel. Growing up, Bill and his family raised horses, and he proudly lived the life of a cowboy from an early age.

He spent many years living in Dove Creek, Colorado, where he found deep enjoyment in the rugged landscape of the Southwest.

Always an outdoorsman, Bill loved hunting and exploring the canyons and mountains of southwest Colorado. He was an avid reader and was inspired by the Western novels of Louis L'Amour and other authors, stories that reflected his appreciation for adventure, open spaces, and the spirit of the West. Bill was also quite the talker and a gifted storyteller, known for sharing stories for hours and keeping those around him entertained.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Morgan Thorne of Idabel, Oklahoma; her husband, Chasson Thorne; and his three cherished granddaughters, Makenna, Averie, and Brynlee. He is also survived by his brother, Shane Underwood and his wife Terri of Idabel, Oklahoma; his sister, Jennifer Vestergaard and her husband Stuart of Durham, Connecticut; as well as several nieces and a nephew.

Bill will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his passion for the American West, and the stories he so generously shared. His memory will live on through his family and all who knew him.

A memorial service is pending, and details will be announced at a later date.
