John C. Welch, age 67, passed away on February 21, 2026, in Amarillo, Texas. He was born on May 10, 1958, in Quanah, Texas, to D.W. Welch and Dorothy (Gooch) Welch. He was raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt Margaret Welch. Though he had several siblings, he was raised as an only child and was proud to call Quanah his hometown.
John graduated from Quanah High School and moved to Amarillo shortly thereafter. He worked for many years as a USDA beef inspector; a career he greatly enjoyed and took pride in until the position required relocation out of state. Choosing to remain close to Amarillo, where his girls were, John transitioned into commercial truck driving — work that suited his independent spirit.
John was married to Connie Welch of Hereford, Texas, a faithful and loving wife of 24 years. Together they blended a family of five children: two daughters, Lindsey and Jessica, and three sons, Chris, Michael, and Emmanuel. John was very proud of the amazing men and women his children grew up to be. Through his children, he was blessed with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He shared a unique and special bond with Maddisson and Michael Junior. Holidays were often spent in a home full of family and laughter. Many cookouts were held on the patio with John serving as both grill master and DJ, keeping everyone entertained with good music, great food, and dancing. He was known for his delicious brisket — and even better beef jerky.
John was a Harley-Davidson enthusiast and loved taking his children and grandchildren on rides. He was a loyal Ford and Chevy pickup man through and through. Though a bit of a loner by nature, he carried an intriguing charm. In 2020, John returned to Amarillo, where he spent meaningful time with his daughters over the next five years — time they will always cherish.
In 2023, a special friend, Michelle, entered his life just before he began experiencing memory and cognitive issues. She became a source of care and compassion, and his daughters are grateful for her devotion during the past three years. John faced his memory struggles with grace and humor, often saying, "You either have to laugh about it or cry about it," whenever he misspoke.
In 2011, he accepted the Lord Jesus as his Savior — a decision that was an answer to many prayers. As he neared the end of his life, his daughters were blessed to walk alongside him. He was prayed with and prayed over often, moments and memories they will forever hold close.
He is survived by his daughters, Lindsey Mercer and Jessica Welch; his sons, Chris Franco, Michael Franco, and Emmanuel Franco; and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His daughters wish to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at Georgia Manor and BSA Hospice of the Southwest for their compassionate care and kindness.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
