Josephine Abernathy, 77, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Josephine was born on January 28, 1949, in Brownfield, Texas, to William and Minnie McCarty.
She pursued her education at Amarillo College, where she earned her nursing credentials and began a lifelong career dedicated to caring for others. As a registered nurse, Josephine devoted many years of service to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at the Neal Unit. Through her commitment, leadership, and compassion, she rose to become the Director of Nursing, a role she held with pride until her retirement after 18 years of dedicated service.
Josephine was known for her warm heart and generous spirit. She cherished time spent with her family and friends, finding joy in their company and in the simple pleasures of life. She also enjoyed shopping and creating lasting memories with those she loved most.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Minnie McCarty.
Those left to honor and cherish her memory include her daughter, Tracie Corpman; her son, David Corpman and wife Heather; her sister, Janice Thompson; her brothers, Ronnie McCarty and his wife Sally, and Terry Lynn McCarty and his wife Sandy; and her seven beloved grandchildren, Kailey, Tiffany, Kason, Aubrey, Fletcher, Micha, and Rylan.
Josephine's legacy of compassion, strength, and devotion to family will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
