Obituary

Matthew Wayne McCurry of Amarillo, Texas passed away on October 15th, 2023 at the age of
47 from esophageal cancer. Celebration of Life services - to include a Tacos and Gatorade
Party per Matt's wishes - will take place on November 18th at 2:00 p.m. at the Amarillo Fire
Department Union Hall, 613 SE 46th Ave, Amarillo, TX.

Matt was born in Amarillo on February 18th, 1976 to Pierce and Velvet McCurry. He graduated
from Randall High School in 1994 and spent many years working for his family's businesses. He
later went on to have a career in information technology, spending his final years working for
Northwest Texas Hospital.

He was known to most as a quiet comedian. Happy to sit back and let a lively conversation
unfold around him, Matt had a habit of throwing out well-timed quips that left the room in a peal
of laughter. His favorite place was the garden. Matt grew many of his own vegetables, and to
have one of his "maters" was to have the best tomato in the Panhandle. He loved music, a cold
beer, and wearing cat t-shirts ironically; especially if the cat was something unexpected, like an
astronaut or flying a taco spaceship.

Matt was a devoted husband, having spent more than twenty years with his beloved wife,
Elizabeth "Beth" McCurry. Seeing their love for each other was a privilege for their family and
friends. They married on April 30th, 2011 in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition to gardening
together, they loved raising their "fur babies". Though Matt may have protested occasionally on
the way to the animal shelter, he would inevitably lock eyes with a furry face and melt into dad
mode. Beth and Matt currently have five rescue dogs frolicking through their countryside home
and land.

Matt was known for having lifelong friendships. The chronicles of their many adventures include
hysterical and seemingly impossible stories. Many of these stories start with growing up in
Amarillo when the FM road was still made of dirt, and the best ways to have fun included ideas
that were a tad dangerous and a tad genius. These friendships were like a brotherhood to Matt,
enduring him through the highs and lows of everyday life.

Folks traveled from across the globe to be by Matt's bedside in his final days. He passed
peacefully, surrounded by his beloved wife and dogs, extended family, and lifelong friends. Matt
is preceded in death by his father, Pierce McCurry, and his brother, Johnny McCurry. He is
survived by his wife, Beth McCurry, his mother, Velvet McCurry, his closest friend, Brandon
Stennett and family, his nieces, Kristen McCurry, Kaelee McCurry, and Norah Combs, his
nephew, Booker Combs, his parents-in-law, Deborah and John Andrews, his brother-in-law,
Patrick Andrews, his sister-in-law, Casen Combs, and his fur babies, Molly, Creasy, Leia, Ruby,
Zoe, and Brooklyn.
