Philip Edward Whitehead, 46, of Amarillo, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 7, 2024.
Philip was born on June 11, 1978 in Amarillo, TX. Philip attended Ridgecrest, Crockett and Amarillo High School graduating in 1997. He then moved to Dallas where he graduated with a degree in computer animation from the Art Institute of Dallas while also working his way through school at various tattoo shops in Deep Ellum. Philip returned home to Amarillo in 2000 where he spent most of his career as a car mechanic, most recently at Rogers Car Care. He was a tremendously talented mechanic and was admired for his hard work ethic, extensive knowledge and for mentoring younger mechanics.
Philip, also known as "Uncle Tubes," had an extensive family in Amarillo because he enfolded everyone he met into his family. If Philip ever referred to you as a "jerk," then you knew you were a part of it.
While some can "kill you with kindness," Philip was known to "hug you through an insult." And he
would do anything for you. Always willing to help someone move, give them a place to sleep, offer a
meal, give you car repair advice…you name it, and Philip would give you the shirt off his back. He was a brother through our childhoods, best man at our weddings, an uncle at our kids' births, and the friend who yelled "Sing Monkey" at his favorite band. There are countless "jerks" all across Amarillo who knew they had a place in his family.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents, Phil and Nancy Whitehead and his beloved pups, Butch, Cassidy and Xanadu.
Philip is survived by his 2 brothers, Chris Whitehead of Dimmitt and Rick Whitehead and wife Betsy of The Woodlands, TX; 3 nieces, Emma Gehring of Virginia and Izzy and Sami Whitehead of The Woodlands, TX; Philip is also survived by a family of friends who knew him as Uncle, Brother, Son, Lover and Friend.
In Lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Amarillo SPCA.
