Steven "Steve" Meyer, age 81, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away July 8, 2025 surrounded by love and memories from a life well-lived.
Steve's love for music began in childhood and continued through his years in middle and high school bands. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served proudly in the 776th Air Force Band. His military service took him to Amarillo, Florida, and Panama, where one of the highlights of his career was performing for President Lyndon B. Johnson. He was honorably discharged in 1969.
That same year, Steve married the love of his life, Norma Pratt, after meeting at the bowling alley. They celebrated 55 wonderful years of marriage—years full of love, laughter, and shared dreams.
After a brief stay in California, they returned to Amarillo to raise their family. Steve completed his master's degree in music and began his teaching career in Nazareth. He later taught in Miami, Texas, and spent 16 years leading the band program at Travis Middle School in Amarillo. He retired from Bushland ISD after a dedicated and impactful career, inspiring many students along the way.
Steve was a lifelong learner and a man who liked to stay busy. He worked summer jobs at plumbing supply houses and found a second passion in real estate. After retirement, he became active in real estate and later property management, which he truly enjoyed. He took pride in serving his clients and caring for both property owners and tenants.
A devoted Mason and Shriner, Steve was deeply committed to the mission of helping others. He loved the Shrine community and had a special place in his heart for the children served by Shriners Hospitals. He was honored to serve as Potentate in 2002, a role he carried out with heartfelt dedication and pride.
Steve was also an avid bowler, hitting the lanes a few times a week with friends, and a skilled bridge player who enjoyed playing in several groups. He truly loved staying active, making connections, and filling his days with purpose.
He will be remembered for his joyful spirit, his deep love for family, his passion for music and service, and his unwavering commitment to helping others.
Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Fannie Fonarow; parents, Albert and Mildred Meyer and father-in-law, H.J. Pratt.
