With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Thuy Gates, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who left this world on September 4, 2025, at the age of 77. Thuy was born on February 20, 1948, in South Vietnam, where her journey began. In 1973, she married Fred Gates, and together they took the brave step of moving to the United States in 1975, ultimately settling in Amarillo in 1976.
Thuy was a vibrant spirit who poured her heart into everything she did. Her gardens were nothing short of magical, filled with colorful flowers and thriving vegetables that showcased her green thumb and love for nature. She was also an excellent seamstress, creating beautiful garments with a skill that left many in awe. Shopping brought her joy, and she had a knack for finding the perfect treasures. Most of all, Thuy expressed her love through her amazing cooking, filling the homes she touched with warmth and delicious aromas.
To her grandchildren, she was lovingly known as "bà ngoại" a name that reflected the special bond she shared with them. Thuy's laughter, kindness, and nurturing spirit will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her daughters, Loni Ramirez and husband Sal of Wichita Falls, TX and Cynthia Torres and husband Daniel of Amarillo; 2 sons, Guy Gates and wife Connie of Goodyear, AZ and William Gates and wife Marti of Gilbert, AZ; 2 sisters, Susan Carpenter and Thi Noung Pham, both of Washington; 2 brothers of Vietnam; 6 grandchildren, Jimmy Matlock, Bryant Matlock, Emily Ramirez, Preston Gates and wife Savannah, Colby Torres and wife Odalys and Mackenzie Ritchey and husband Andrew; 5 great grandchildren, Calian Gates, Camila Torres, Luis Torres, Rowan Ritchey and Nixon Ritchey and 1 more on the way, Brecken Ritchey and her beloved dog, Phoenix.
Thuy was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters; husband, Fred Gates and granddaughter, Brittany Torres.
